The history of Harghita County stretches back to ancient times, closely intertwined with the history of the Szeklers and Hungarians.   • Ancient Times: According to archaeological discoveries, the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era (2.4 million years ago). During the Middle Ages, the Szeklers had defensive roles and played a crucial part in protecting the borders of Transylvania.
  • Szekler Freedom:The Szeklers fought to preserve their freedom and autonomy. At the Diet of 1566, the status of the Szekler Land was solemnly reaffirmed, recognizing its administrative autonomy and right to self-governance, reflecting the Szeklers’ tireless struggle for freedom and autonomy.
  • Turning Points: Throughout its history, the county has witnessed several power struggles, including periods of Habsburg domination and the two world wars.
  • Challenges of the 20th Century: Despite the harsh trials during the two world wars and the subsequent communist period, the Szeklers managed to keep their culture and traditions alive.
  • Today, Harghita County proudly maintains its rich Szekler traditions and boasts numerous historical monuments, as well as remarkable examples of folk architecture.
